Installing GITmaxed on Windows takes about two minutes and needs no administrator rights for a standard per-user install. This guide covers system requirements, download, installation, first launch, upgrade from GitHub Desktop, and uninstall.
System requirements
| Requirement | Minimum |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 (64-bit) or Windows 11 |
| Disk space | ~400 MB free (application, bundled Git, Electron runtime) |
| RAM | 4 GB (8 GB recommended) |
| Git | Not required — GITmaxed ships its own Git runtime |
| Internet | Required for sign-in, cloning, and update checks |
| Extra runtimes (.NET, VC++ redist) | Not required — all libraries are bundled |
Download
Download the latest GITmaxed release from the project's releases page. Two distribution forms may be offered:
- Installer — standard Windows setup; adds Start menu shortcuts and a per-user installation
- Portable folder — extract anywhere and run
GITmaxed.exedirectly
Install steps (installer)
- Run the downloaded GITmaxed installer.
- Complete the setup wizard — default options are recommended.
- Launch GITmaxed from the Start menu or desktop shortcut.
Install steps (portable)
- Extract the archive to a folder you control (for example
Documents\GITmaxed). - Run
GITmaxed.exefrom inside the extracted folder. - Optional: pin the exe to the taskbar.
First launch
On first launch GITmaxed shows the welcome screen with sign-in options. Choose sign in using your browser (GitHub.com), complete the OAuth flow, and the account is added. Additional accounts can be added later from Preferences → Accounts — this is the multi-account core of GITmaxed. A fresh install shows no repositories; use "Clone a repository" or "Add a local repository" to begin.
Upgrade from GitHub Desktop
GITmaxed does not import GitHub Desktop's settings automatically, but moving is easy: sign in again inside GITmaxed (one OAuth click per account), then Add local repository and point at your existing repository folders. History, branches, and settings inside each repository are untouched — they live in the repository's .git directory.
Uninstall
- Installer version: remove via Windows Settings → Apps → GITmaxed, or re-run the installer and choose uninstall.
- Portable version: delete the folder.
Your repositories and Git history are never touched by uninstall — they live wherever you cloned them.
FAQ
Do I need Git, Node, or anything else installed first?
No. GITmaxed is self-contained — Git and all runtime libraries are bundled.
Does it need administrator rights?
Standard per-user installs run without elevation. Enterprise deployment scenarios may differ.
