This guide walks through your first session with GITmaxed: sign in, clone a repository, make a commit, push it, and assign the right account. No prior Git experience is required — every step has a visual counterpart in the app.
Step 1: Sign in to GitHub.com
- Launch GITmaxed. The welcome screen offers sign-in methods.
- Choose sign in using your browser and pick GitHub.com.
- Approve the OAuth authorization — the same approval screen GitHub Desktop uses.
- The account appears under Preferences → Accounts. Done.
Repeat for every additional account (work, personal, client organizations). There is no limit and no need to sign out of anything.
Step 2: Clone a repository
- Click Clone a repository.
- Choose from Your repositories (switch the account at the top if you want another account's list), or paste any repository URL.
- By default the repository is cloned into a subfolder named after the owning account, so different accounts' repositories never mix on disk.
- Click Clone. The repository appears in the sidebar and opens automatically.
Step 3: Explore the interface
- Left sidebar — current repository list, branch list, and per-repository settings
- Top bar — current branch, Fetch/Push buttons, and (in repositories with an assigned account) the account picker
- Center — working-directory changes (staged and unstaged) or the history graph
- Bottom — commit message field and the "Commit to <branch>" button
Step 4: Make your first commit
- Create or edit any file inside the repository folder with your editor.
- Return to GITmaxed — the file appears under Changes.
- Stage it with the checkbox (or stage individual lines by right-clicking in the diff).
- Type a commit message and click Commit to <branch>.
- Click Push origin — authentication happens silently using the account assigned to this repository.
Step 5: Assign the right account (multi-account users)
If the repository was cloned from a specific account, the assignment is already correct. For repositories added from disk, use the account picker in the Changes sidebar to choose the account; GITmaxed remembers the choice permanently and uses it for all future fetch/push operations on that repository.
FAQ
Where are my repositories stored on disk?
Wherever you choose in the clone dialog. By default GITmaxed suggests a path containing the account name — keep this to benefit from automatic account assignment.
Can I add repositories I already cloned with another tool?
Yes — use "Add local repository" and pick the folder, then set the account once in the Changes sidebar.
